The Add-Art Mission

  • Provide millions of web users with an option to view to art instead of advertising during everday web browsing.
  • To help everyday web users to discover and understand contemporary art.
  • To provide an unconventional, independent venue, and broad audience to artists and to compensate artists for their participation.

Goals

To create a configurable ad-blocking browser extension that substitutes advertising in web pages with art images. The plugin will be on par with the best ad blocking software available, with the further ability to simply add art instead of blank space. To insure as long a life as possible, the plugin will require little maintenance and few resources as possible.

An Autonomous System

This project should be as sustainable as possible through creating a system which can maintain itself with little intervention and maintenance. Add-Art should work without being dependent on any one person. At first I (Steve Lambert) will need to administer it, tweak the system, make improvements, and keep it on course, but I hope to minimize this input as the project develops. Later, any administration should be simple enough that anyone can do it. This way the project doesn’t have to end if someone is not able to continue working on it for any reason.

A venue for artists

Add-Art should be an alternative venue for living artists to display their work. They should be paid if possible. This goal should not lead to Add-Art becoming another source of advertising.

Non-Goals

  • add-art will never be a product. It will always be free and open source.
  • Going on forever. Add-art’s survival is not more important than it’s goals. (Add-Art can die and that’s ok)
